Poker Tilting
Most players connect the word "tilt" to pinball games. When one pushes the pinball machine a bit harder than usual, a "tilt" message is displayed and the machine quits responding to any flipper commands.
In the game of poker, a "tilt" operates much the same way. A "tilt" occurs when a player looses concentration in the game and finds it difficult to focus again. "tilting" occurs when emotions or other forms of distractions bewilder the player of a short while.
This form of distraction can be lethal for the player for it makes the player gamble more in an attempt to cover up the bank-out moment.
There are also degrees of the "tilt". The ones that break a players concentration for a little bit are called small "tilts" while the ones that slowly manifest themselves in the player are called biggie tilts. Biggie or bigger "tilts" are the ones that many players should be aware of. Some biggie "tilts" can lead to addictive gambling.
"Tilting" is like a disease without any remedy, but has an important difference. Even though its influence is always around, it can be controlled. It may be difficult for some and easier for others.
Self monitoring.
Players have to be aware that in order to avoid "tilting", one has to take note of their mental train of thought of right moment This is the easiest part. One can start by remembering the feeling of playing their last game of poker. Players who can project that good feeling of themselves can avoid the "tilt".
Confidence plays another factor in the "tilt". When a player feels confident, the player performs at their peak and that distraction factor is not as noticeable anymore.
Fatigue plays a major part of the "tilt". The players overall mental condition begins to deteriorate and becomes vulnerable to distractions. The mind starts to get filled up with thoughts of rest, of sleep, a good mug of beer before sleep, and others. Pretty soon the mind becomes a clutter of various thoughts going off at the same time.
Avoiding the "tilt" is crucial. When one feels or has a sudden inkling of a tilt, one has to take immediate action themselves. Having a companion would not make a difference for the tilt is something internal.
Other options one can do if the one feels the tilt coming on:
- If feeling fatigued, take time off to rest. - If one feels behind the game, stop and call it a day. - If in a bad mood, do not play. - If one feels uncomfortable playing at the table, wait for while before playing again.
